2009 Recap

Coming into the 2009 Big 33 game, Pennsylvania was in the midst of a three game winning streak over their counterparts from Ohio. However, 2009 was looking like a good year to end that streak for Ohio, with 32 of their 34 players being recruited by Div. I-A teams. Ohio was expecting to blow-out the hosts, but Pennsylvania had other plans in mind, with what became one of the most exciting games in Big 33 history.

The game opened with a bang, when West Catholic High School standout Rob Hollomon returned the opening kick-off to the Ohio 39 yard line to give Pennsylvania great starting field position. Pennsylvania took advantage of the great field position by scoring quickly, to give themselves an early 7-0 lead. However, Ohio responded continuously, led by game Most Valuable Player, quarterback Austin Boucher from Kettering Alter High School.

The game remained close throughout, but midway through the third quarter, two plays turned the tables dramatically. After converting on a 4th and 16 and getting down to the Ohio 1-yard line, Pennsylvania quarterback and team MVP, Curtis Drake fumbled the ball on the next play and Ohio recovered. On the next play, Boucher connected with receiver Micah Hyde over the middle and Hyde outran everyone for a 99-yard touchdown. The play set a record for longest play and longest touchdown in Big 33 history.

Pennsylvania managed to tie the game at 31-31, but with 20 seconds left, defensive end turned fullback, Adam Replogle scored from 1-yard out to give Ohio a 38-31 victory, snapping Pennsylvania’s three game winning streak.

Pennsylvania holds a slim 9-8 advantage over Ohio since the Ohio-Pennsylvania series resumed in 1993.
