Considering the history of quarterbacks who have suited up for Pennsylvania in the annual Big 33 Football Classic, joining such a prestigious list can feel overwhelming.
Of course, that’s not how Danville’s Madden Patrick or Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Jy’Aire Walls choose to view this opportunity. It’s just football.
“It’s playing ball,” said Walls, who guided the Vikings to a WPIAL 6A title and PIAA final in December. “I know it’s a big opportunity to represent my city and my school. I’m happy to do that.”
Quarterback play is always paramount, but Patrick and Walls have been through plenty of big game moments over the years.
So, the plan is to extend those moments Sunday when Pa. and Maryland compete in the 68th Big 33 Football Classic at Cumberland Valley’s Chapman Field.
Both bring plenty of excitement and skill to the party.
“It was very exciting to be chose. The last time someone has been selected to the Big 33 game from Danville was like back in the 1990s,” said Patrick.
“It’s an honor to represent not only where I’m from but how we play Ironman football back in central Pa. We just have to go out and play some football.”
Patrick, who will continue his career at East Stroudsburg, left Danville as the District 4 all-time leader with 96 touchdown passes.
In his final season, the 6-1, 185-pounder guided the Ironmen to the program’s first Eastern final behind 2,620 passing yards and 29 scores.
Patrick, a two-time All-State pick, also rushed for nearly 400 yards.
Walls, meanwhile, turned 142 completions into 2,625 yards and 28 TDs.
The North Carolina A&T signee is back at Chapman Field following PCC’s loss to St. Joseph’s Prep in December.
“It was pretty exciting after learning about the game when I was younger,” Walls said.
“It definitely places you up there with some of the best athletes in Pittsburgh, so that’s an inspiring thing.”
